"Opening Exhibition" Rodolfo Hamawi, National Director of Cultural Industries

is an honor to represent in this act the Secretary of State for Culture, Jorge Coscia, that health problems prevent you from becoming present.
attended for years as editor and then as the authority of the Cámara Argentina del Libro to the opening of our beloved Book Fair. Today I have to act as an officer so I can have a comprehensive perspective of the book present in our country.

The book published in Argentina is going through not a good time, but a very good period with impressive growth rates. In 2002, our publishing industry 33,700,000 copies had been collected in 9,500 titles. In 2010, nearly tripled the number of titles, reaching 26,400, representing almost 76 million copies published.

The reasons for this growth is related to the intellectual quality of our authors, with the enormous efforts of publishers, but mainly with economic policy and social redress the national government has been developing since 2003 and has created the conditions for the market to strengthen and to increase the consumption level of society.

macro
These figures contain both different realities.
one hand, vitality, drive and the risky bet of more than 500 small publishers to make Argentina one of the countries most bibliodiversity the world. On the other hand, the great economic concentration that the sector has held since the '90s, which is corroborated when warned today that 60% of production is held only 22 publishers.

is necessary to promote a development linked to equity and universal access to cultural property. There are many actions that are promoted by the national government in that direction. As the Equal Connect program, which will reduce the digital divide equalizing educational opportunities for our students.

In that vein, I want to briefly tell you, especially visitors and publishers that share the day to day, some actions that we have deployed from the Ministry of Culture of the Nation.

The national state has given a clear signal about the place of reading in their priorities, creating the National Reading Council. Your task is to coordinate the promotion of reading being carried out by different agencies that comprise it: the Ministries of Education, Health, Labour and Social Development, the Ministry of Culture, the National Library and public libraries, and also radio and Argentine television. This year we will have the results from the National Survey of Reading Habits, which will provide quantitative and qualitative data on how we read today in the country and how to encourage new readers. We want the Argentine boys born with a book under his arm. Therefore, this Council is preparing to deliver this year, starting with the Northeast region, a set of books for all children born in public hospitals.

At the other end of the arch reader, we present in this same Fair, the Argentine University Book Shelf. Work we have done from the Ministry of Culture and the Ministry of Education, the National Universities INTI and to network the entire editorial production produced by universities.

To improve the link between authors and readers and create skilled jobs we have created together with the Ministry of Labour and the chambers of the first school libraries Booksellers. In Buenos Aires and the first class had emerged late last year, was launched 15 days ago Booksellers School Córdoba and hope to launch in the second half of Rosario.
this experience we are conducting with the University of Tres de Febrero in Buenos Aires and Villa Maria in Cordoba.

continue a policy that takes several years with the program Books and Houses, which provides libraries to housing built with Federal Plan of the national state. This year we can say with pride that the first 100,000 homes humble furniture of the house was a library with its first 18 copies. So that we will complete 1,800,000 books delivered.

We support this great breeding
the journals publishing culture. We are providing subsidies to the 10 magazines around the country who were selected in the contest Abelardo Castillo.

We have relaunched the National Culture Award, the highest honor and encouragement of cultural production from year to year will allow writers, playwrights, essayists, musicians and just receive the national recognition to their works.

sector accompany claims designed to eliminate the asymmetries with imported books, and defend the idea of \u200b\u200bthe need for an Institute of Book promote and stimulate the production of small and medium-national publishers.

This series of actions for promotion combines two guiding principles, diversity and equality, enabling fundamental concepts in the field of culture, higher levels of fairness and excellence for the production, market objectives if alone can not ensure.

believe in the cultural exception. We must protect our cultural heritage, purveyors of symbols, values, knowledge and identity of the destructive tendency of asymmetrical globalization. Defended as an engine of diversity, plurality and freedom expression.
So we hope that this show remains a space for discussion of all topics that span the life of the country publishing. There is no society without dissent. There is no society without conflict. Our government is respectful of not hide disagreements and conflicts. The book is a favored tool of those debates, so this show should guarantee them avoiding any spurious use violates the spirit and ideas.

Colleagues and friends, editors, every editor is hiding a teacher, though not always confess something we teach our books. During this fair we will have a great opportunity to do teaching.
Explain that an active state, this, taking charge of their responsibilities, is not contrary to freedom, but the guarantor of that freedom in equality. May explain that in Argentina, the book does not pay VAT, which the publishers receive state subsidies, which the State finances translations and fairs. And in that context, no one was banned, freedom of publication and expression is absolute, and no one asked about his political affiliation to buy books or subsidize their issues. Teaching that serve to set the time on some watches that late by more than a century.

In this edition, we welcome that the city of Buenos Aires has been designated global capital Book by UNESCO. Our desire is that our beloved city again become the great cultural beacon that was able to transform the great host of national and Latin American influences, open to the creative flows of the fraternal countries, mindful of the asymmetries that cross the country and that many Sometimes the locals tend to increase. A book should be opened to be read. When a city is closed, the books are closed.

Finally, I wish them every success for the huge effort made and wish them good sales, but mostly a lot of culture. That this Fair is increasingly one of the biggest cultural events in the world edition.
